Today I’m going to highlight the first of the three families that joined me at Alki Beach on Saturday for portrait sessions. Penny is a long time friend that I have not seen for a few years. Luckily, a mutual friend gave her the heads-up about my photography business, she visited my Web site, sent me an email and the rest is history. It was so good to see her and catch up a bit. It’s been about three years since we last saw each other and a lot of changes have taken place in the mean time.
It’s been a few years since they have had pictures taken and Penny was interested in getting away from the traditional studio setting. Despite the fact that she and her kids are going through a relatively challenging season in their lives, Penny really wanted an honest and authentic portrayal of where her family is at this particular moment in time. I really appreciate Penny’s perspective on this and it resonates a lot with my philosophy and approach. Of course, I’m the kind of mom where last time I was in the studio to get pictures taken of my kids (3 years ago), I asked them to not do anything special to remove the road rash that my son had picked up in a fall on the pavement. I wanted to remember him exactly as he was at that moment in time. Even if that meant that he had a big scab on his forehead.
It was a lot of fun to see Penny and the kids and we were able to capture some great shots in the short time that we had together. I’ve included a few samples below. Check out the one of Ceara on the steps. After the first shot of her, I changed my position so that she was between me and the harsh direct sunlight. I love how it created this cool halo effect around her. What do you think?
Also, just a reminder to check back tomorrow when I highlight another family from Saturday’s Alki beach sessions.
